What are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are natural mixtures of volatile, fragrant agronomic compounds found in plants. These compounds are extracted by steam or solvent distillation, and are sold predominantly to the international fragrance, cosmetic, flavour and aromatherapy markets. They are high value products extracted from specific plants like rose geranium, rosemary, lavender, lemon balm, peppermint, frankincense, tagetes, roman chamomile, german chamomile, and many other similar plants. These essential oils are in high demand especially from the developed world, Europe, USA and Canada.
Essential oil farming offers many advantages over more traditional crop farming, especially for the smaller scale emerging farmer. Being high value crops, essential oil production provides a more attractive income generation alternative to the conventional agricultural crops for the small scale farmers. With the help of an incubator like SEOBI, small scale and emerging farmers can run sustainable and profitable farming enterprises.
